- Use the bark on a wisp of light, and follow the Shadow Runner.

– Detailed Walkthrough –
Between the Moonless Walk and the Library of Dusk Wayshrine, there is an abandoned pack in a camp. You search it and find a signet showing the pack used to belong to a member of the Fighters Guild. You decide to look around to find out what happened to the Fighters Guild members.
Tracking the Guild
Next to the pack, you find Captain Alphaury’s journal.
Now you need to find the Fighters Guild members. This is to the southwest of the camp. The quest marker points to placed blade, from which you must travel west. This leads to a campfire, and Faraniel appears.
She says the Shadow Walkers will kill the Fighters Guild members. However, she wants to help you save the guild members. She suggests following the trail of placed blades.
You travel northwest to another placed blade, this time pointing east. At the campfire, you see Faraniel standing over a dead body. She says the other soldier, a Khajiit escaped the Shadow Walkers. She can’t kill the other members of her clan, but she can help you find the Khajiit. She says you need to be able to spot the Shadow Walker runners. To do this, you need to collect three pieces of spriggan bark and infuse them with the wisps of light.
The Shadow Runner
You can collect spriggan bark from the bodies of dead spriggans. After you collect all three pieces of spriggan bark, bring them to Faraniel. Touch the bark to a wisp of light, then cross the Ayleid bridge. You will find a runner you can follow. If the effect wears off, you can touch another wisp.
Lamia or Shadow Walkers
Follow the shadow runner, until you come across a fight between the Shadow Walkers and the Khajiit, Sergeant Kamu. He says the Fighters Guild heard voices calling for help. Captain Alphaury figured out they were coming from the tower. You send Kamu to the Hollow City, but you can ask his opinion on the situation before he leaves. He would choose Faraniel, but the lamia did help him.
Both Faraniel and the lamia claim to know how to get inside the tower. Faraniel says you can convince her clan to stop killing outsiders because you know about the Planemeld and Molag Bal’s treachery. The lamia wants you to stop the slaughter of her people, and she adds that the lamia never made an agreement with the daedric prince.
Talk to whomever you want to side with and promise to help them. This completes the quest.
Notes
A second abandoned pack can be found between the Spurned Peak and the Moonless Walk, allowing this quest to be started from the northern road. In this case, the journal at the camp is a Note from Kamu.

– Detailed Walkthrough –
Talk to Faraniel outside of the Moonless Walk, south of the Moonless Walk Wayshrine. She is uncomfortable discussing the details of the quest with the lamia nearby, so she has you meet her on a bridge to the east.
You will need to perform a “honor deed” to get the clan to trust you. You need to kill the lamias, burn their eggs and defeat their champion. You can persuade her, if you have the persuasion perk from the Mages Guild, to just kill the Lamia Champion.
The Lamia Champion
The lamia champion’s cave is south of the bridge.
There are many caves in the area, but the lamia champion’s cave is the one with Muiriana the Dark inside it. Kill her, then go to the center camp and talk to Faraniel. Faraniel will give the lamia’s head to the council, while you talk to four wood elves at the camp.
Advice for the Council
You will have to intimidate Sanithil twice if you want her advice. She suggests you be tough on Elder Gluin and don’t take no for answer. You have to persuade Idreloth twice if you want his help. He says to be compassionate when you see Elder Elsaril.
Mindirin says Elder Inril is the most likely to listen to you, but you have to let her speak. Eginthoril says you should use humor when you talk to Elder Erthor.
After you talk to all four wood elves, Faraniel will appear and say the council has agreed to meet with you.
When you are ready, enter the portal and make your argument.
The Elder Council
The first elder you meet when you leave the portal is Elder Erthor. Choose the middle response: “I see how well that’s worked out so far. What’s a few hundred years when you’re having fun, right?”
Elder Gluin is kneeling next to the tree behind Erthor. Choose the first option: “Lose the attitude and listen well. I’ve seen the anchors. They’re destroying Nirn!”
Elder Inril is behind the tree. Choose the middle option: “My lady, Coldharbour’s chains rip through Nirn. Valenwood will be destroyed unless we do something.”
Elder Elsaril is to the left of the portal’s exit. Choose the last option: “I’m so sorry, but I’ve seen the daedric anchors.Thousands have already died. You must believe me.”
Talk to Faraniel at the camp once you have convinced all four elders. After you finish talking to her, Erthor will step through the portal and tell you the council’s decision. If you have persuaded at least three of the elders to help, the council will send runners to unlock the passage to the tower and give you soldiers to fight Molag Bal. Talk to Faraniel again, then go to the ruined passage.
If you fail to convince enough of the council, they will not assist you, and state that anyone who decides to help you will be exiled from their clan. Faraniel says she will not give up, and gives you a key to the ruined passage anyway.
The Lightless Oubliette
The passage will take you to the Lightless Oubliette. Examine the ancient branch to the left and take the Light of Meridia, a blue crystal.
Talk to King Laloriaran Dynar on the stairs. He gives you a reward.
– Quick Walkthrough –
- Collect and place the three crystals.
- Destroy the two receivers binding the Ayleid King by rotating crystal prisms.
- Talk to the king.
- Enter the portal to the Hollow City.
- Enter the Fighters Guild Training Grounds.
- Talk to the king.
– Detailed Walkthrough –
You need to first unlock the door to the Ayleid King’s prison.
The Crystal Puzzle
Enter the Lightless Oubliette tower. You need to recover three crystals: Lifeshadow, Mindshadow and Flameshadow Crystals.
The Mindshadow Crystal is at the south end of the room, in the library. Take the red crystal at the southernmost end, then use the library gate switch for a quick way back into the main area.
The Flameshadow Crystal is inside the Frozen Alcove. Take the red crystal from the end of the Alcove. Once you do, the Frozen Alcove will begin to melt as lava seeps in through the floor.
The Lifeshadow Crystal is at the north end of the room, in the garden. Take the crystal at the bottom of the stairs, then use the library gate switch at the top to exit quickly.
From left to right, place the Mindshadow, the Flameshadow and the Lifeshadow Crystals. You can place the crystals whenever you want; you don’t have to collect all three, then place them.
After the crystals are in place, enter the Ayleid King’s prison and set him free.
The Prism Puzzle
Activate the first crystal prism to the left. Follow the light beam to the last crystal, the third lit one, and press it three times. Press the crystal that lights up five times. Repeat this process of activating the last lit crystal until the next one lights up until all the crystals are lit, and the prompt destroy the north receiver is complete.
Next, you need to do the same thing to the south receiver. Place the light of Meridia in the crystal prism in the southeast corner, then rotate the crystals around. For the second crystal from the southern receiver, make sure the beam of light is headed to the crystal closest to the receiver.
Destroying both receivers frees the King. Talk to him, then follow him as he limps to the eastern side of the room and opens a portal to the Hollow City.
The Hollow City
Enter the door to the Fighters Guild Training Grounds, then climb the stairs and talk to the King.
Notes
The Light of Meridia can be used within the ruin to brighten the area. Passing near an Essence of Darkness will dispel the light.
Continue to the next Coldharbour skill point questing zone, Black Garrison.
