– Detailed Walkthrough –

Murilam Dalen, the Pact envoy in Windhelm, is standing on the docks near the entrance into the city. Windhelm’s citizens are celebrating King Jorunn’s tenth anniversary as the Skald King—a celebration known as the Konunleikar where Nord clans compete in various challenges in order to honor the king. He asks you to speak to Thane Mera Stormcloak, the captain of the Windhelm guard.

Thane Mera is standing in the center of the town, next to the Palace of Ysgramor. Enter the city through the open gate behind Murilam Dalen, then go right, then left. You should see a well and a gathering of people. Take the stairs on the right up to the third level of the city. Thane Mera is next to a large wooden door and red Pact banners.

An Enemy from the Past
The Thane is worried about the strange reappearance of the Stormfist clan; they haven’t been seen in 10 years. Every since this year’s games started, there have been many injuries and even a few deaths. Thane Mera Stormcloak asks you to ask around the Cold Moon Inn, where the clan is staying, to learn more information. If you ask her more questions, you can learn that the Stormfists wanted Jorunn’s brother, Fildgor, to be king.

Cold Moon Inn is southeast of Thane Mera. Go upstairs, and read Leimaer the Raven’s Journal, which is on the ground next to the last bed on the right. One of the Stormfists has hidden caches around the city, so that the clan can cheat.

Confiscate the Caches
The caches look like glowing sacks.

“Where mount and mare rest calm and easy”

This cache is hidden in the stables, across from the Cold Moon Inn. Inside is a note from “L” and a knife to cut through armor.

“Between a moon that’s cold and a wizard’s hoard”

In the street behind the Cold Moon Inn is another cache. This one has a noisemaker arrow to scare off the prey in a hunting competition, according to L’s note.

The final two caches are on the west side of Windhelm.

“Behind a cracked henge stone, west and breezy”

This cache is behind one of the long upright stones at the southern end of the city. It contains incense.

“At the rear of Windhelm’s only abstaining Nord”

This is the northern of the final two caches, hidden next to some rocks behind the other Inn. It contains poison.

Once you find all four hidden caches, return to Thane Mera Stormcloak outside the Palace of Ysgramor. She gives you some gold—now you need to find out what’s really happening in Windhelm.

While you were investigating the Stormfist clan, Thane Mera Stormcloak says Windhelm’s champion was injured. She wants you to enter the Footrace of the Nine Holds as Windhelm’s new champion. To do so, you need to speak to Lenning the Hawk, the race organizer, at the western wall. He is southwest of the Thane, next to the standing stones where you found a cache during the previous quest.

The Race of Nine Holds
Since you are the last racer to arrive, you need to light the starting flame, then run through nine towers symbolizing the nine holds. The first racer to exit the ninth tower is the winner.

Cheating at the Konunleikar
However, once you exit the sixth tower, you see one of the racers, Hadring the Swift, lying on the ground. You can help him, or you can keep running. If you help him, he tells you the assassin ran south.

Talk to Lenning the Hawk at the end of the race. He congratulates you and tells you Thane Mera is looking for you.

Return to the Palace of Ysgramor to talk to the Thane. If you did not help Hadring the Swift, she will tell you he was murdered during the race, but no one saw anything. She gives you your reward, 293 gold.

– Detailed Walkthrough –

Thane Mera Stormcloak wants you to find the assassins responsible for Hadring the Swift’s death during the Footrace of the Nine Holds. She names you Justice Carl of Windhelm, which grants you the authority to deal with them.

If you helped Hadring the Swift, you will know that the assassins fled to the south. If you did not help Hadring during the previous quest, you will have to question witnesses. The witnesses are next to the Cold Moon Inn. Outside the crafting area is Turril Omalor. He is bored and doesn’t want to talk about what he saw. You will need the Intimidation Perk if you want him to talk.

The Assassin’s Camp
Once you know where the assassin went, you can try to find them. Head south out of Windhelm, over the bridge, towards the Kynesgrove Wayshrine. The camp is actually directly north of the wayshrine. A group of Stormfists should appear, and you should be prompted to collect the assassin’s orders and evidence.

Defeat and loot the assassins to get the Stormfist Brigade Emblem, which counts as collecting evidence. Next, go to the western tent, defeat the Stormfists there, then read Orders from Fildgor.

Return to Thane Mera. She realizes that Fildgor has returned to Skyrim and King Jorunn needs to be warned.

The Hall of Trials is northeast of the Palace of Ysgramor. When you enter, you see Leimaer the Raven, a Stormfist, win a duel. She approaches the king, but before the king can congratulate her, one of the guards denounces Leimaer’s trickery. She poisoned her opponents. However, she only laughs and declares that Fildgor is here to claim his birthright. She says Jorunn’s reign is over and attacks. Other Stormfists in the arena help her as you, the guards, and the king fight back.

Talk to the king once all the Stormfists have been defeated. He asks you to let Thane Mera know what happened.

Thane Mera is relieved to know her king is fine and considers you “the champion of the day.” She gives you Thane Watch, a shield, and 117 gold for saving the king’s life.

After you free the soldiers and take the relics from the lockbox, a ghostly woman should speak to you. She says her name is Queen Nurnhilde.

Go to the barracks and talk to Lieutenant Koruni. She thinks the Stormfists want something from inside the royal crypts. She didn’t see the woman who talked to you when you took the relics. Koruni thinks you should listen to whatever Queen Nurnhilde’s spirit says.
