The Venomous Fens is the southwestern region of Shadowfen. Murkwater in the south is the largest settlement in the region. The White Rose Prison is located in the northern part. Most of the other locations are ruins of various types. The Venomous Fens Dolmen is located to the west of Murkwater. The Reticulated Spine region borders on the north, while Leafwater is to the east.

You will need to complete the quests in order from 1 – 3; the quest givers are marked on the maps below. Sometimes the skill point is awarded before all of the quests in the zone are finished, but the remaining quests need to be completed because they are prerequisites for the next questing zone. Once you have completed The Dream of the Hist in the Venomous Fens questing zone, you will be rewarded a skill point.

– Detailed Walkthrough –

Gerent Nuleem-Malem says you should tell Vicecanon Heita-Meen what the Dominion’s alchemist, Ruuvitar, plan to do with the Mnemic Egg.

The Vicecanon is northwest of Loriasel, behind a camp. She explains the presence of lamias in the area—the Dominion stirred up their nests. You tell her that the Dominion plans to use the Egg to separate the Argonians from the Hist. She is horrified and asks you to search the camp for any sign of Ruuvitar’s location while she rallies the soldiers to attack the ruins.

The Abandoned Camp
Ruuvitar’s Journal is in a tent to the left. In the center of the camp, next to the cooking fire, is a dead Argonian prisoner. He is covered in a mixture of blood and sap, and it looks like the Dominion was experimenting on him, as he has “Subject 17” written on his shirt. To the right is a letter to Soldier Kazdi, a soldier who objected to the Dominion’s treatment of the Argonian prisoners.

Next, you talk to Gerent Kepanuu. He says the Dominion retreated into the ruins. He suggests you find Ruuvitar, so you will be able to defeat the Dominion in one blow. Head east into the ruins to find the alchemist.

A Traitor or an Ally?
In the ruins, directly across from the entrance, although you will need to walk around the walk with the blue flame, and down the stairs, you find Kazdi, the reluctant Dominion soldier. Untie her, and she runs to the north end of the room.

Kazdi says Ruuvitar took the Egg behind the door and sealed it. Although she expected you to kill her, Kadzi will help you open the door. Ruuvitar often bragged about it, so she knows what to do.

Tell her you are going to keep her hands tied up, then talk to her again. You need to activate three Ayleid crystals.

Unsealing the Door
The first crystal is in the main room, south of Kazdi and the sealed door. Next, use the keystone holder south of the first crystal, next to the stairs. This unseals the door. If you do not have the keystone, or do not want to use it, you will need to fight through the ruins to locate the other crystals.

The Traitor’s Fate
Talk to Vicecanon Heita-Meen at the newly unsealed door. You can decide Kazdi’s fate by being lenient or telling the vicecanon to kill her. If you decide to be lenient, the vicecanon will ask you if you are sure. You can change your mind and let the vicecanon decide, ask for more time to decide, or tell the vicecanon Kazdi should not die.

Whatever your choice, the vicecanon will meet you later on to search for Ruuvitar. However, she wants to thank you now in case one of you dies.

3. The Dream of the Hist
Quest Giver: Vicecanon Heita-Meen
Location(s): Loriasel, Vision of the Hist
Reward: Chain of Hist’s Power + 283 Gold + 1 Skill Point
Recommended Level: 31

– Quick Walkthrough –

  1. Kill Ruuvitar.
  2. Talk to Vicecanon Heita-Meen.
  3. Talk to Gerent Nuleem-Malem.
  4. Examine the Mnemic Egg.
  5. Solve the purple plume puzzle.
  6. Talk to the Hist-Brothers.
  7. Talk to the Voice of the Hist.
  8. Talk to Vicecanon Heita-Meen.

– Detailed Walkthrough –

Talk to Vicecanon Heita-Meen. She prefers that you capture Ruuvitar alive, if you can, but understands that you need to kill him.

You enter the Loriasel Lower Bailey to kill Ruuvitar. You can use the keystone holder, which will free Ruuvitar’s four captured Argonians, but Ruuvitar will appear regardless.

After he dies, Vicecanon Heita-Meen runs up to you. Follow her to the Mnemic Egg, then talk to her. The Egg needs to be removed from the ruins, but the vicecanon is afraid it is trapped. She kneels by the Egg and appears to be magically stunned.

Gerent Nuleem-Malem runs up from the northeast. She says you need to wake the vicecanon before the Egg destroys her mind.

Touch the Mnemic Egg, and you are transported into a Vision of the Hist.

Vision of the Hist
Inside the Vision of the Hist, you see the vicecanon and purple plumes of magic.

The vicecanon says your minds are joined inside. If you heal Ruuvitar’s damage to the Hist while inside the Egg, perhaps it will recover. She thinks the purple plumes might be Ruuvitar’s magic. Her hint for the puzzle is “get to the heart of the matter and leave no corner unexplored.”

The Plume Puzzle
Start at the northwest corner. Next, use the southwest corner. Then use the heart plume, the one in the center, then northeast plume and the southeast plume.

This pattern can be repeated no matter the starting point, as each corner controls the same amount of plumes. So pick a corner, then use a consecutive corner, then the center, then the two remaining corners.

The Hist Brothers
Continue with the vicecanon deeper into the dream. In the next large room, talk to the Hist Brothers, semi-transparent Lurchers.

The Hist Brothers are confused because one of the vicecanons, Vicecanon Hrondar, led the skin-stealers. You can say none of the vicecanons led the skin-stealers or that a skin-stealer posed as Vicecanon Hrondar.

The next Brother is confused because “the Dark Elf vicecanon,” Vicecanon Servyna, “tried to destroy the eggs at the Hatching Pools.” You can say she was never at the Hatching Pools, or that she tried to save the eggs, not destroy them.

The final Brother heard that the skin-stealers boiled Hist Sap for Daedra. You can tell him the Dremora Lyranth was responsible, or that Ruuvitar boiled the Hist Sap and the Dremora was his prisoner.

The Voice of the Hist
Once you have talked to all three Hist Brothers, you will hear a voice. The vicecanon is surrounded by green smoke and disappears. The voice beckons you back into the room where you solved the plume puzzle.

Talk to the Voice of the Hist at the statue. What it says will depend on your choices when talking to the Hist-Brothers.

“Flesh walkers rarely visit our dreams, small one. The whorls of your thoughts bring warmth to our own. Soon we awaken, to nourish ourselves back to health. You must leave, or be dashed against our dreams.”

or “A flesh-walker joins our dreams. A welcome diversion, small one, before we rejoin the void. Though we soon depart, the vicecanon carries our thoughts within her. You must follow, lest we drag you to the void with us.”

Where is Vicecanon Heita-Meen?

“When you quickened our dream, we knew her great purpose and sent her beyond the dream. But you…we could not send you just yet. You healed the wounds inflicted by the flesh-walker Ruuvitar, small one. The Hist shall dream of you, always.”

or “You quickened our dream, small one. Yet our memories wither and fade. We must soon follow. We could not stunt the vicecanon’s greater purpose, so we sent her beyond the dream.”

Once you finish talking to the Voice of the Hist, your vision darkens and you wake up back in Shadowfen.

Back to Shadowfen
You awaken on a ship, soon to depart to Skyrim. Talk to Vicecanon Heita-Meen to complete the quest.

Continue to the next Eastmarch skill point questing zone, Giant’s Run.
